Craigslist job posting (New Media Marketing)

So the other day I was looking around at job opportunities in Austin, TX when I happened to come across job entitled New Media Marketing. As you can see the description was brief yet somewhat intriguing so I figured I’d submit my resume and see what happens. The following day I get this email:

Hello,

Thanks for your email, we appreciate your desire to work with us.

About the Position:

Our company builds and maintains websites for hundreds of businesses
across the world. Often our clients websites will go down for hours at a
time without notification, causing them to lose lots of valuable time, money
and potential new users/ customers. Having the site tested at regular intervals
helps our clients save money and insure that their site is always working at maximum
functionality.

Your job will be to visit a list of websites that we provide to you, observe the site
and spend a few minutes looking at various pages of the website (ie clicking links and exploring
the site as though an everyday user would. You may also be required to test other site functionality
such as the sign up process and follow up process to make sure an end user would fully understand this.
You will be required to interact with the site as an end user, ie fill in forms, submit comments etc.
You will be required to spend around 5 minutes on each site and perform important actiosn which we will
outline in detail for that particular site.

Many of our clients also use our services not only to test their websites but to also test their follow up marketing
procedures and their own marketing staff. You may receive follow up emails or contact from the companies and you
will be required to act as a mystery shopper to test their all round strategy. You will report back on the follow up
so they can monitor their own staff activity. To this end you will be required to act interested in their products/ services
or websites and not reveal your own project.

Users will be given access to private areas of client websites which includes back offices, product download pages etc.
As a result successful applicants will be required to sign a NDA agreement. All sites have been tested and are virus free
and completely secure.

You will be paid $17.50 per hour on a bi-weekly basis. You will be required to work a minimum of 16 hours per week
and a maximum of 40 hours per week. We will provide you with the projects and a timescale to complete them in.

I have attached a small test project for you to complete to access your suitability for the role.
Please read the instructions carefully and then return your completed project back to me as an attachment.

Once I have your completed test I will notify you if your application has been sucessful.

If you have any questions then please let me know.

I look forward to working with you in the future.

Just from reading this I was suspicious that they were going to have you going around to websites clicking on adsense ads or something. I received the email from the address @trigemedia.com so I figured let me see what these guys are about. If you visit trigemedia.com it’s a parked domain.

Attached to the email was their test which included 6 links to websites which would redirect to a different domain. Four of the six forwarded to a survey page in which, according to the rules, I was suppose to fill out. In the email above you can see where they tell you that IF contacted you should pretend as though you were actually interested in the product or service. The other two links went to pages where I should just upload a image, or check navigation.

Here’s my theory, and although I think it’s somewhat genius, it is definitely a blackhat affiliate strategy and deceitul:

This is a part of one of those survey affiliate programs or something similar to CPAlead. Which means every time he can get someone to fill out a survey he gets paid. So while your thinking that the reviews that you’re writing actually matter, most likely they don’t and it’s just to make you believe that your doing something more than giving your information to companies so that they can constantly bug you to purchase their products or services. I honestly don’t know if you’d ever even get paid.

I’ll post more later on this, after further investigation.

Oh yeah, if you go here you can see that they’ve posted this everywhere in Craigslist.

Nice catch. I bet there are many people who fall for this. I think it turns people off from craigslist for job searching.

  2. Paula October 23, 2008 4:50 pm

Some of the sites require your credit card information, so maybe they’re scamming people that way.

  3. jackie November 3, 2008 11:45 pm

I too received this ad. I took the bait and when I sent my assessment the email for donnamaxwell43@gmail.com came back as a delivery failure. No such email is found.
    I smell a skunk!

  4. Robert November 12, 2008 1:19 am

    FYI:

They are also taking the information off of the resumes that are being handed-in, and using them for money transfers ect.

Basically, from what I’ve heard it’s an identity theft scam!!

I also applied to something similar, the email was donnamaxwell43@gmail.com

    Here is what she said:

    Hi,

Just a quick email to say we are still reviewing all the job applications.

We had a lot of quality applicants and will be contacting the successful ones to arrange interviews.

Once again thanks for your patience.

    all the best

I never tried calling the number, it’s probably a deadline–plus it would be crazy-long distance charges!!

Anyways, I hope that adds to the investigation.

I saw a special on something like that on CNN about a month ago… fake job postings to collect personal information. I’m not sure with this it is the case, but it could be.

  6. Iva November 13, 2008 7:06 am

Cool! I got one 2. Fortunately I found your post before I went through that crazy procedure. Seems that Craigslist is full of scam cause that’s not the only fishy thing I got from them.
Check this out, I believe it’s a scam.

I feel for the same thing for a job in sandusky ohio. when i looked at other cities there was the same posting.. I received the same email as the original poster however i did not open the attach afraid that it may be a virus of some sort. You really have to watch CL now-a-days… especially posts with a gmail account. This sucks! I need a JOB!

  8. Patricia November 14, 2008 12:55 pm

This “job” is posted everywhere on craigslist. Too bad. There are a lot of good uses for craigslist. I would suggest that people start flagging the posts at cragislist..it might help to have them permanently removed.

I didn’t do any of the tests. I did write and ask for their company credentials so as to verify their legitimacy. We’ll see if I get a reply!

  9. Sharon November 21, 2008 11:11 am

The same thing just happened to me! I received an email from hiring@alphatri.com in response to a craigs list job posting that I applied for. I was directed to a “data entry testing” site where I was instructed to fill out my personal information. It was total SPAM. The link in the email reads: http:www.alphatricorp.com/s39nt.html It is obviously a hand typed hyper link that leads you to instantdollarz.com.

  10. Coyol November 21, 2008 11:15 am

It’s funny you bring that up because I’ve noticed alot of traffic lately to this page from “alphatri” related keyword referrals and I was wondering where that was coming from.

It is to bad that in a time where it is hard to find a job you have to deal with people like this too.

  11. Susan November 21, 2008 11:47 am

Orange County, CA - received the same 2 emails, 2 days in a row for the same scam 2-part test. Looked phishy so I called the company referenced and discovered the parasites are using legitimate marketing company’s names (perhaps competitors), damaging their reputations and good names, as well as preying on jobseekers who have submitted their resumes, contain personal info.

  12. Victoria November 24, 2008 7:56 am

Researching Hi-Impact Marketing – then Googling the rave review of Tim Bussey,

Hi. I repeatedly be familiar with this forum. This is the oldest together undisputed to ask a topic.
How multifarious in this forum are references Nautical port behind, knavish users?
Can I depute all the communication that there is?

  14. Yankee in the South December 2, 2008 4:52 am

Thanks for the postings! I recieved much the same but different name.

    “Mary Lohman
    HR Director
    Healthtrex Corporation”

healthtrex dominion name expired. No such organization. checked out alphatricorp and found this wonderful info.

What goes around comes around. Thanks everyone!

  15. tania December 2, 2008 10:00 am

    dont answer to this one

  16. Tao Man December 2, 2008 12:54 pm

Ditto to Yankee in the South’s post (#14 above)
Can’t these people find better things to do?

  17. jobseeker December 4, 2008 5:45 am

I seem to have gotten hit by this one too, seems they use a lot of different names from what I gather since you guys already mentioned a few, here’s what I got:

    Sylvia Rivers
    HR Director
    Chandos Data Corporation

Dang, they must have a lot of time on their hands to make up so many fake names. Dang, it’s annoying because I’m sure there are plenty of legit jobs on Craigslist, it just sure isn’t easy to find one.

  18. Vickey December 8, 2008 12:29 pm

I’m glad I looked before I leapt! Below is the e-mail I got. Much the same as others, different name. I was skeptical to begin with, but more so when I found no results for the company and only a blank page for the domain listed in the test. And then I found this site…

Good luck to everyone who is, like me, searching for a good paying job!

I got the 2 part test email from Denise Ziff, HR Director, Tri-Star Data. I’m glad everyone is posting about these kinds of things somewhere. It seemed kinda fishy to me, but I really need a job, so I figured I’d research it first and this site came up.
Anyway, the email came from hiring@alphatriaccess.com and it contains the same 2 links for the test as one of the previous postings above (alphatricorp.com blah blah blah). The other thing that made me suspicious is that when I typed “Tri-Star Data” into Google, nothing really came up. Only once I typed in “alphatricorp” with no spaces did something interesting come up.

    Thanks guys!

  20. crystal January 14, 2009 10:21 am

I just got that in Las Vegas too. I’m sure many people fall for this…ugh.

  21. Cathy January 20, 2009 8:50 am

Just an FYI, I got one today too in Vegas. Beware - it is a scam!!

  22. michele January 23, 2009 8:27 am

Received the same email…gosh I love blogs! Going to flag them on Craigs List

  23. Jake January 26, 2009 9:51 am

I suspected as much when I got this email, however the from: field on my email read:
    Human Resources (hiring@alphatriaccess.com)
Also, the ad i responded to read:
    Full-Time Cust. Service Representative Wanted

  24. Simone January 26, 2009 8:17 pm

I too got the 2 part test email from Accu- Health Katrina Evansa HR Director. Email came from hiring@alphatriaccess for a Administrative Assistant Needed ASAP (Raleigh NC).
Did a google to find out it’s a scam posted on Craigslist

  25. Darcy January 28, 2009 10:12 am

I just got this too here in MN, sucks for I thought it was going to be a legit job!

  26. Marcia January 29, 2009 3:40 am

I fell for it ! I completed the test and uploaded my resume. Yesterday I got the following email from the “Personnel Department”

Thank you for taking the time to take our
data entry test. I am happy to say that
you did an outstanding job on the test.

Based on our overall review of your test
performance as well as your resume, you
are among the top 10 candidates for this
    position.

Since there is currently only one opening
available, I would like to set up a time
for you to come in and interview for the
    position as soon as possible.

Because we need to find the most reliable
candidate, we require all candidates to
go through a quick credit check prior to
    interview.

Please take 5 minutes and complete your credit
    check at:

    http://www.alphatricorp.com/cr1zx.html

Be sure to complete each page in order to
arrive at your overall credit score. Once
you are given your credit score, please
Write down or remember this score.

You will have the option afterwards to be
given a copy of your credit report. Please
DO NOT SEND your credit report. We only
    require your score.

Please reply to this e-mail with your credit
score as well as the dates and times that
you are available for the upcoming interview.

    Thank you,

    Tom Brockington
    Personnel

Since when does a company ask you to do your own credit report, write down your score, then send it to them in an email! I can pretty much guess that it’s their website and once you fill in the info they have all your credit info.

  27. Lisa February 2, 2009 9:25 am

Thank you so much for saving me time and frustration. I received the same two part test email from Sylvia Rivers, HR Director,
    Chandos Data Corporation.

  28. Brandy February 2, 2009 2:50 pm

I fell for this one too, just today. Feel like a real dummy now. Mine was the same as above, but slightly different. I got through thier “test” and now I’ve got about 100 junk e-mails from marketing sites!! Bet they start calling my phone anytime.

hiring@alphatriaccess.com is the e-mail address that I got the message from and the title line was: Re: F/T Admin. Assistant.

The info on the person that sent it is simply:
    Ruth Levy
    HR Director
    Vetex Data

  29. Nicole February 3, 2009 10:45 am

I just received this e-mail from hiring@alphatriaccess.com after submitting my resume yesterday for a F/T Administrative Assistant position in Bloomington, MN. I thought something was fishy when the posting from yesterday was no longer there and it was posted on today’s list, but for a different location around the Twin Cities. The signature I got was:

    Sylvia Rivers
    HR Director
    Chandos Data Corporation

I hate it when people try to take advantage of you!! I’m unemployed and trying to get a job in a horrible economy, and all they are doing is making it more difficult!!! Arg!

  31. Shawna February 4, 2009 8:57 am

Just like all of you, I also received this scam. I seemed a little strange to me, so I googled their company name (Chandos Data Corporation) and found this blog. Thanks for posting it, had I not stumbled across it, I would have fell for this scam for sure. Good luck to you all! Hang in there.

  32. Amanda February 6, 2009 7:07 am

I am in Nashville and I got a similar e-mail for an Admin Assistant job from hiring@alphatriaccess.com

People really need to stop messing around with others in this economic state, I have been laid off from two jobs in 6 months. The last thing I need right now is to waste my time getting emails like this and applying for jobs that do not exist. What happened to the honesty of people.

  33. Ms. WIlliams February 6, 2009 9:34 am

Just a Note to say Thank you for the time an consideration of advising the rest of us all to such a potential issue. Thank YOU.
It is Greatly Appreciated. & Such a shame when people aren’t on the up n up. THKS Again!

  34. Laura Anna February 6, 2009 12:42 pm

Thank you all for posting and saving me and others a ton of trouble. I got the exact letter from

    Sylvia Rivers
    HR Director
    Chandos Data Corporation

And I’m in New Jersey! I hate scams wasting my time when all I need is a decent job. Good luck to all of you out there.

  35. Mariann February 6, 2009 5:26 pm

Man! This sucks big…I am so in need for a job, i thought, @ first, that it was a real company…same deal with inputting your information into these advertisements, as fast as you can, etc…got another e-mail saying that I was in their Top 10 candidates and take this timed test, 6 pages in 5 mins. and make sure that you put the info that is on your resume on the info given….right before 5 mins. the connection to the site was lost. Such a dumbie! I usually don’t participate in these but I really need a job. Don’t do it! I now get like e-mails up the a@@ from the ads I did.

  36. Nicole Rebecca February 7, 2009 2:45 pm

Thanks for posting this… I could tell right off the bat after clicking on the “Part 1″ of the “test” that something was up. It took me to a Jenny Craig “free gift” sign-up site. I got the same e-mail from “HR” but from the Company, “Zephyr Market Research.” I’m very under-employed and just need a full-time job - and these a**holes are just sitting at home scamming people! How lame.

  37. L. Bukowski February 9, 2009 3:18 pm

I am forwarding this site to my state attorney generals office. I recommend that everyone do the same.!

Send copies of the listings and your emails.

  38. Essie February 10, 2009 9:45 am

I got the same email. Glad I found this information out…ridiculous

  39. Whitney February 10, 2009 9:49 am

I received the same email today in New Jersey. I was pretty excited to have such a quick response but when i clicked on teh link and it was a survey asking for credit card info. I typed in the name of the company and got this blog. Glad that you guys are talking about this because I really need a job and actually considered putting my real info down. This is really awful that at a time like this people are taking advantage. Just despicable. Keep blogging

Exactly the same thing happened to me. i got

    with the alphatricorp tests!

I wish these parasites would get a life and leave genuine job huunters alone. this is the 3rd such thing i’ve received from craigslist…i won’t be going back there!

  41. Melissa February 10, 2009 10:07 am

I got the same e-mail and was very disappointed it was a scam. I replied to a job post on craigslist and then it sent me the same exact e-mail except signed as
    Megan McTavish
    HR Director
    Panex Marketing
This was a posting for Coeur d’Alene, ID. Guess it’s pretty much everywhere.

  42. Christine February 10, 2009 11:41 am

    Likewise … mine was signed

Like others previous I found this site when I googled Chandos!

At the same time I received two from employeers(?) who reviewed my resume on Career Builders.

“I am the Marketing Assistant to the Regional Managers of a company going through a period of tremendous growth and expansion. “Fortune Magazine” has recognized our parent company on their 100 Fastest Growing Companies list over the past several years. In addition, we are consistently recognized in the Top10 in “Selling Power Magazine”. Due to the expansion in our market share, the West Coast Regional Manager, who has 4 years experience with our company, is currently interviewing to fill two sales management openings in the greater Tucson area. After reviewing your resume, he has asked me to set up a confidential screening call to discuss your qualifications.”

Hummmmmm not sure about this one

I replied to a Admin job on craigslist and got the same message as everyone else did.. a scam.. but it was signed by

    Jill Watson
    HR Director
    Corvus Market Research

    and sent from hiring@alpatriaccess.com..
watch out.. don’t reply to the craiglist ad

  44. Kara Hall February 16, 2009 10:48 am

I received the same email from the Madison, WI area. This one was signed:
    Jill Watson
    HR Director
    Corvus Market Research

    Just FYI…it really is everywhere.

  45. Jenn February 17, 2009 10:25 am

I too was just hit by this! I dont understand peoples logic, or their lack of! There is so much uncertainty in the world of jobs right now and people just dont need it!

  46. Julie Smiley February 17, 2009 10:40 am

Got the same thing here, says I passed their data entry test and to take one more “time test” which was this marketing questionaire thing. You know, this really isn’t nice for those of us who are looking for work, it’s a waste of time and tends to get ones hopes up.

  47. R February 18, 2009 7:30 am

Just wanted to say thank you for all the info…saved me another headache in my job search here in the Detroit Metro area…with the economic collapse, this job search is the hardest I have ever been through and scammers like this only make it more difficult to weed through and find real jobs available. So frustrated with Craigslist that I am seriously considering never using it again for job searching.

  48. Ida February 18, 2009 6:38 pm

    I responded to one of the employment ads on craigslist-Orlando. I got an e-mail from the HR department asking me to complete a 3 page test in 2 minutes!!! It was all surveys… Here is a copy of the e-mail;

Thank you for taking the time to reply to our
job posting here at Corvus Market Research.

    better marketing campaigns.

Because this job position requires excellent data
entry skills, we ask that you take our two-part
data entry test. At the end of the test, you
will have an opportunity to submit your resume.

For Part 1 of our test, you will access one of
our websites whch has been customized for this
test. Part 1 should take you less than 2 minutes
to complete and is 3 pages long.

directions and your accuracy rate. Therefore, it
is crucial that you enter all of your personal
information correctly on pages 1 through 3 as it

Also, be sure to answer every question, even those
that seem survey or opinion oriented. You may answer
those questions however you choose, but if you skip any
of them then your test cannot be processed.

IMPORTANT - Once you complete page 3, be sure to
write down the first 3 words of text that you see
on that page, because you will need those words to
complete Part 2 of the test.

You can access Part 1 of the test here:

Craigslist Jobs postings are almost 75% this scam stuff; I’ve stopped using it. First they try to snag you with the “higher” pay than other companies are offering, then they reply the same or next day which these days few employers seem to be doing and then BAM!!! SPAM!!!!
Now that they have figured out people are catching on to that they post more normal wages but it is the same sad song and dance.
I think Craigslist out to check the stuff they post a bit more thoroughly BEFORE they add it to their list. They area a joke on the job hunting landscape, which is very sad. And it is not nice to be mean to people just trying to find a REAL job.

  50. Heather February 23, 2009 11:31 am

I received the same email. Mine was for an Administrative Assistant Position that I had applied for on Madiison.craigslist, The contact person was
    Jill Watson
    HR Director
    Corvus Market Research

I sent an email to craigslist identifying it as spam and flagged the original posting.

  51. Tony Chambers February 26, 2009 11:26 am

I got the same thing for an Admin Assistant position. Fake! I sent the e-mail to my cousin at a local government agency

  52. Mary February 26, 2009 1:37 pm

Like eveyone else, I’ve been applying for jobs after being laid off after 28 years. I too was excited about the e-mail because it came from Innovex which is a legitimate company help in high regard.

but instead of filling in the info, I did a check on the alphatriaccess and thank God…someone took the time to show it was a scam, and evidently one that is around the country.

I have contacted Innovex and will forward the e-mail to them. Isn’t there something we can do about this? Isn’t there an organization that goes after these people? Am I now getting all this crap because of my using Craig’s List?

What a shame….I’m open if anyone has an idea how to get even with these guys.

I got one from “Beth Williamson HR Director Innovex” and I just sent a copy of it to Innovex, a legitimate company. This sux for both me and that company, who are probably decent folks.

seemed fishy to me, also. I am finding all kinds of these off of Craigs list and also finding the adds of some are being removed.

The Sharks and Scammers smell blood. There are some legitimate operations, but so many of these do not seem honest.

Thank you for this resource. It is frustrating enough hunting for good work, but in this market most of us really do not need the double whammy of having our data phished, used in scams, much less investing such important and valuable time on these “pie in the sky” misleading operations.

I too applied for a job off of Craig’s List. I got back this email. When I realized it wasn’t real. I contacted Innovex (a local company). This is illegal to false represent a company. I hope whoever is behind these scams get caught!

I am like many of you, out of work for the first time in 30 years. I can hardly believe that people would be this dishonest as to advertise false employment ads. This is so disheartening. It is bad enough that real jobs are so far and few nut to waste time applying to frauds in unspeakable. The people should be ashamed of themselves if nothing else. I am fed up with this happening over and over again. I plan to contact the district attorney in my county to see what if anything can be done. After all this is fraud.

This is definitely some kind of major scam!!

Yesterday I responded to a job posting on craigslist in Nashville, TN, for an administrative assistant. I wrote them back asking for proof of legitimacy before I provided any personal information and got back an email (I’ll paste it into this email) asking me to take their data entry test before uploading my resume. I googled the name of the company it was supposedly from — Innovex — which has no job openings listed in Tennessee and whose business doesn’t fit the description on the email I received. I also googled the email address it came from — hiring@alphatriaccess.com — and that’s how I found this. There is no such website, as you already learned.

Beware. This is so depressing. I wish I knew some way to upload a virus to this so it would stop them from this deception.

Here’s the email I received. I haven’t clicked on the links:
